Issue #3 is the third published chapter in Volume 1 of the Comics, and focuses on Lance. The storyline of Volume 1 occurs after the episode Rebirth and ends prior to the episode Crystal Venom.

Synopsis

A beautiful princess in the clutches of a vicious space dragon? Seems like a job for Lance! Voltron's (over)confident Blue Lion pilot swings into action but pretty soon learns that this monster is not at all what it seems.

Plot

Lance and the Paladins have a princess to save. Before they embark on this perilous quest however, the Paladins decide to contact Princess Allura regarding their extended absense. The Paladins tell Allura that Coran is currently under the custody of Kythylian Mu and that they must obtain a Yalexian Pearl in order to do so. Fueled by her desire to save Coran, Allura stands up, but Shiro told her to stay and recover. While talking with Allura, Lance tries to flirt with her, but all he only succeeded in making the Princess scold him and clench her fist at him.

The Paladins approach a tower where Princess Malocoti is held captive. Of course, no captive princess is ever complete without a dragon to watch over all who dare cross its path and Princess Malocoti was no exception. The Paladins form Voltron to engage the dragon, but the dragon is too nimble to hit with the sword and has enough firepower to match the shoulder cannon. Hunk notices that the dragon never tried to directly attack and Lance surmises that the dragon is actually Princess Malocoti due to the dragon clenching its fist much like Allura did before.

The real guardian of the tower is none other than "Princess Malocoti" who is actually a witch. The witch splits Volton back into five with her magic and proceeds to take out the Black Lion, the Yellow Lion, and the Blue Lion. With the Green Lion suddenly gone, Lance "skillfully" avoided the witch's magical blasts and remained the only Lion in the air. All of a sudden, an invisble force slams the witch on the ground and holds her down. This invisible force is none other than the cloaked Green Lion and Pidge who sneaked up on the witch while she was distracted by Lance.

With the spell released and the witch gone, Malocoti is now free and she reveals her true form to the Paladins. She thanks the Paladins for saving her and told them how to obtain the Yalexian Pearl. In order to obtain such a treasure, the Paladins must trust on the bravest and most clever among their ranks to "pass the brain-sucking mushrooms, defeat the ghostly chess master, and solve the riddle of the Sphinx." The Princees chooses Pidge as the bravest and most clever among the Paladins. Unfortunately for Lance, the narration scrolls switch from focusing on him to focusing on Pidge.

Trivia

  • The narration of the story up to the last panel is from Lance's perspective.
  • On the first panel, Lance introduces himself to be the "Defender of the Universe" which is based off of the opening line of Voltron: Defender of the Universe.
