Merla is a Altean Acolyte who is one of the remaining descendants of the Altean survivors that were off planet performing trading expeditions during the destruction of planet Altea. She served Haggar in order to bring back her son Lotor. Later she turned against Haggar when she tried to sacrifice her friends to Lotor.
Her name is an homage to Queen Merla, a villainess created by World Events Productions and placed in the second season of Voltron: Defender of the Universe.
