Voltron: Legendary Defender

As some may know,the live action movie is currently being produced. There have been some cast members confirmed, but we don’t have any information on which roles are they going to play. Since this movie is gonna introduce a new generation of pilots, is very likely that we see new characters. At the same time, we can definitely expect an appearance (or a cameo) of at least 1 of the original Paladins. So these are my guesses on the characters of the cast of Voltron.

(NOTE: THESE ARE MY GUESSES ON THE ROLES FOR EACH ACTOR. ONLY THE CAST IS CONFIRMED, NOT THE CHARACTERS)

• Henry Cavill as Sven Holgensson

If you watched the original 1980s cartoon, you may recognize this character as the pilot of the Blue Lion (for only a few episodes). In the original Japanese version “Go Lion”, he was killed by the witch Haggar, but due to the censorship of the era, in the American version, Sven was fatally injured that he was unable to pilot again. He later falls in love with Romelle and has a child with her in Voltron Force.

I know that Henry Cavill is an American actor with English, Scottish and Irish heritage. But due to Sven having a Nordic accent, you may be thinking that it wouldn’t make sense of him portraying Sven. I believe that he fits the role of Sven, because of his resemblance to the characters and he might speak in a Viking accent in the movie.

My theory is that Sven will act as a mentor to a group of underdog cadets to become the new Paladins of Voltron and train them to fight against the Galra Empire.

• Sterling K. Brown as Coran

In the original 80s anime, Coran has a more serious personality than his Netflix reboot counterpart. So I felt that Sterling K. Brown could fit the role. If he does portray Coran, I believe that his character will be helping Sven with the training of the new Paladins of Voltron.

• Rita Ora as Princess Romelle of Pollux

Romelle is quite different in the 80s version compared to her Netflix counterpart. In the original Voltron anime, she was the distant cousin of Princess Allura and lived on planet Pollux (Altea/Arus’ evil counterpart).

I know some of you may think that Rita Ora should portray Allura, but if Henry Cavill does have the role of Sven, then it will be fitting that someone as famous as her can portray his romantic interest.

• Alba Batista as Princess Larmina of Altea/Black Paladin

If you didn’t watch Voltron Force, then you might have trouble remembering this character. Larmina was a character introduced in this series as the niece of Princess Allura set to train as a pilot of Voltron.

I can definitely imagine Alba Baptista portraying her or someone from Allura’s family. Larmina was originally the pilot of the Blue Lion, but it will be interesting to see a female character leading as the head of Voltron.

• John Kim as Akira Kogane/Red Paladin

For John Kim, I believe that his character will be related to Keith,

the leader of Voltron. In the Japanese version, his original name was Akira Kogane, but when the American version was created, only his first name was changed to Keith. So I believe that John Kim’s character will be possibly Keith’s younger brother, nephew or cousin.

You may be asking why not his son? Well, I can actually imagine them having more of a sibling dynamic than a paternal one (like Keith and Shiro from the Netflix reboot).

I believe that in this movie, something bad might have happened to the original Paladins, if that’s the case, then Akira’s goal will be to find his lost brother, uncle or cousin. In the 80s anime, Keith’s personality was of a responsible and mature leader, but I can imagine Akira having a similar personality to his Netflix reboot counterpart, a lone Wolf with a rebellious attitude.

• Daniel Quinn-Toye as Daniel Lee/Blue Paladin

Daniel Quinn-Toye is a new actor and this is supposed to be his 1st movie ever. When I first heard his name, I immediately through of Daniel from Voltron Force. Like Larmina, he appears in this series as a cadet training to be a pilot of Voltron. So I can definitely imagine him portraying Daniel or a new character with a similar personality. He trains to be the pilot of the Black Lion, but I believe that he fits better as the pilot of the Blue Lion. I know he’s supposed to be the main protagonist, but that doesn’t mean he has to be the leader of Voltron (In the reboot, Keith was initially the pilot of the Red Lion and 2nd-in-command of Voltron, so I believe that Daniel Quinn-Toye’s character will follow a similar path).

• Samson Kayo as Vince Shurtleff/Green Paladin

Similar to Daniel and Larmina, Vince was a character in Voltron Force that was training to become a pilot of Voltron (his last name was never confirmed in the series, I came up with one). Vince was known to have a close relationship with Pidge and eventually succeeded him as the pilot of the Green Lion by the series finale. I know some of you might think Samson Kayo’s character should be a character similar to Hunk due of his physical appearance, but I believe that his character will be more of a technological genius like Vince.

• Tharanya Tharan as Lisa Abbas/Yellow Paladin

Since the Yellow Lion (in the Netflix Reboot at least) is supposed to be piloted by someone who is supposed to be earnest and strong-willed.

I believe that those should be the traits of Tharanya Tharan‘s character. I also think that she will be based on Lisa from the Vehicle Force(I know many fans don’t like Vehicle Force, so please don’t judge me because of this comparison). Also, they never gave her a last name, so I came up with one.

• Laura Gordon as Haggar

I know some of you may asking why do I think Laura Gordon will portray Haggar if she’s too beautiful for the role?

Well, in the 80s anime, Haggar was once a beautiful woman, but later became an evil witch after being rejected by King Alfor, Allura’s father.

If Laura Gordon does get the role of Haggar, then she will use makeup to adapt more of a Galra or Drule appearance similar to the character.

• Tim Griffin as Lance McClain

In the 80s anime, Lance was the pilot of the Red Lion that bécame 2nd-in-command of Voltron after Sven’s fatal accident. If something did happened to the original Paladins, then it will be Lance who is considered the only survivor of the group. I believe that his role will be to supervise Sven training the new pilots of Voltron as a flying instructor at the Galaxy Garrison (like his Voltron Force counterpart). Also, I can imagine Lance and Sven having a rivalry on who was the better 2nd-in-command of Voltron.

• Nathan Jones as Emperor Zarkon

Zarkon is supposed to be Voltron strongest enemy, so I think it will make sense that someone has physically strong as Nathan Jones to portray him (I mean, seriously, he’s got very strong muscles. If you watched Mad Max, then you’ll know what I’m talking about). I can definitely imagine that he is going to have prosthetic makeup to look more like an alien.

(There’s also a rumor saying that Keanu Karim and Kevin Spink will be characters in the movie, but I didn’t added them, because that is not yet confirmed)
